Falls Brazil
The impressive falls in Brazil
On the border with Argentina lies one of the most beautiful natural spectacles in the world. The Iguaçu Falls. From the Brazilian side you can walk straight into the heart of the falls. The sound is deafening and the experience is unforgettable.
Iguaçu Falls in Brazil
With more than 275 cascades, the Iguaçu Falls in Brazil are undoubtedly the most impressive natural monument in the southern hemisphere. With an average height of 80 meters, the Iguaçu Falls are higher and five times larger than Niagara Falls in North America.
The word Iguaçu means "big water" in the indigenous language Tupi-Guarani. The falls are formed by the Iguaçu River. The water of this river plunges here, looking for a new riverbed, down to 80 meters deep. Walkways and bridges bring you very close to the thundering water. In the evening, the red light of the setting sun gives it a magical glow. It's not surprising that these falls are called a natural wonder of the world, or one of the most beautiful spectacles on Earth. This region has been on the UNESCO list of World Heritage since 1984.
The total width of the falls on the Argentian side is about 1900 meters. On the Brazilian side, the total width is about 800 meters. The height of the falls varies between about 40 to 80 meters. The average flow of the river is about 1500 cubic meters per second. The largest amount of water flows here in the months October to March. Of the 19 most important falls, 14 are located on the Argentinian side. Only 5 important falls, namely; the Floriano, Deodoro, Benjamin Constant, Santa Maria and the Union, are located on the Brazilian side. With a significantly smaller number of important falls on this side, it certainly doesn't mean that this side is any less interesting, because it is from this side that you have a wonderful, perhaps even the best, view of the largest number of falls!
