Travel itinerary

Day 1: Amsterdam - Buenos Aires

Your unique journey through Argentina in 3 weeks starts today. You will board your intercontinental flight to Buenos Aires in Amsterdam in the evening. You will arrive here the next day.

Day 2: Buenos Aires

You arrive in Buenos Aires today. Upon arrival you will be welcomed by our local staff and brought to your hotel. Buenos Aires is a beautiful metropolis also known as 'the Paris of the South'. This is because of its numerous shops and boutiques, architecture, cultural life, restaurants and its cosmopolitan population of predominantly Italian, Spanish, French, German, English, Eastern European, Arabic and Asian origins. The city is one of the most European of South America and of the entire southern hemisphere and today you have the opportunity to get to know it better.

Day 3: Buenos Aires

Today you will be taken along the most important sights of the fascinating Argentine capital in a special way. You will go by bike together with your guide to the characteristic district of La Boca with its colored houses and home to one of the largest football clubs in the world; the Boca Juniors. You will visit the real city center with the Plaza de Mayo and the presidential palace Casa Rosada. Of course you will also visit the stylish district of Recoleta, where the famous Cementerio de Recoleta cemetery is located. At this cemetery you will find the grave of Evita Peron. This city excursion is not complete without an introduction to the old district of San Telmo, the birthplace of tango. Your bike tour ends at Plaza San Martin.

Day 4: Buenos Aires – Salta

You will be picked up from your hotel today and taken to Buenos Aires airport, where you will board your domestic flight to Salta. Once here you will be taken to your hotel. You will stay at Kkala Boutique Hotel, located in the Tres Cerritos district at the foot of one of the mountains around Salta. The city center of Salta is less than five minutes away from your hotel. The hotel has 10 rooms, each with its own name and personality. The names are based on national parks and beautiful places of Salta. You will find peace and exclusivity here.

Day 5: Salta

This day is scheduled off. Salta in Quechua, the language of the Incas, means 'very beautiful' and the province certainly does honour to this name. The region has beautiful canyon landscapes with multicolored mountains, but also high plateaus (punas) with meter-high cacti. Salta is a beautiful colonial city with an attractive central square, the Plaza de Armas, which also has a few good restaurants. You can visit the most important sights of Salta, such as the cathedral, the San Francisco church and the San Bernardo mountain, from where you have a great view over the city.

Day 6: Salta – Purmamarca

(approx. 190 km | 3 hour drive)
Today you will pick up your rental car and drive to Purmamarca. You drive towards the city of Jujuy, the northernmost city, not far from the Bolivian border. This place is also the heart of the most indigenous region of the country, most of the population is of Indian descent. Here you can taste the real authentic Andean atmosphere, typical for Peru, Bolivia and the north of Chile. The end of this drive takes you into the Humahuaca Valley, a ravine that runs south from the border with Bolivia. The Rio Grande created the basis for this impressive landscape ten thousand years ago. In this valley you will also find the traditional village of Purmamarca.

Day 7: Purmamarca

This day gives you the opportunity to explore Purmamarca and its surroundings further. Purmamarca is located at an altitude of 2200 meters at the foot of the 'Cerro de Siete Colores', the impressive mountain that actually has 7 colors. The colors in the rocks are caused by oxidation of the different minerals in the soil: manganese gives a purple color, copper gives a green color, clay gives a yellow color and depending on the iron content there are different shades of red. It is a perfect place to acclimatize and get used to the peace and space that the far north of Argentina offers. You can also visit the central square where many products are traded; ponchos, rugs and souvenirs or the little church of Iglesia Santa Rosa de Lima.

Day 8: Purmamarca – Cachi

(approx. 305 km | 6.5 hour drive)
From Purmamarca you can take the Ruta 52, a spectacular route to the Salinas Grande salt plain. After arriving at the salt flats you drive south via a dirt road to a hard road (Ruta 40) in the direction of San Antonio de los Cobres . At San Antonio de los Cobres you have the choice to drive back to Salta via Ruta 51, taking route 33 south of Salta at El Carril in the direction of Cachi.

Day 9: Cachi 

Today you can get to know the town of Cachi and its surroundings. The beautiful colonial appearance, the good roads and the prominent buildings tell the story of a relatively prosperous past in trade and board. This history can also be found in the museum Arquelógico Pío Pablo Díaz. In addition to this museum there are some other interesting sights in this town.

Day 10: Cachi – Cafayate

(approx. 165 km | 4 hour drive)
Today you will drive through the mountains to Cafayate. The dry landscape and the enormous amount of sunshine, make this area very suitable for viniculture. Cafayate is a small, cosy town surrounded by beautiful mountains, vineyards and bodegas. There is a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Day 11: Cafayate

This day is scheduled off so you can visit some wineries in the surroundings of Cafayate. In this way you will learn more about the production process of the export product that has made Cafayate so famous. You can also visit the central square Plaza San Martin. Here you will find nice shops, terraces and restaurants. Everything is within walking distance, even a few bodegas where you can get a free tour and a wine tasting.

Day 12: Cafayate – Tafí del Valle

(approx. 140 km | 2.5 hour drive)
Today you will drive from Cafayate to Tafí de Valle, a short drive. In the time before the arrival of the Europeans, life for the natives revolved around Pachamama, or Mother Earth. She was at the center of life and was honored, as were the sun and the moon. The menhirs you can see in the valley are the remains of this period. On these enormous pillars gods and signs are pictured that show the good harvest and fertility. The 114 enormous granite pillars are no longer in their old place, they were moved by the inhabitants to the village of El Mollar.

Day 13: Tafí del Valle – Villa Unión

(approx. 600 km | 9 hour drive)
A long traveling day is planned for today. From Tafí del Valle to Villa Unión is a long but pleasant route. You will drive from your hotel via Tafí del Valle back to Ruta 40 which will take you to Villa Unión. This small village is situated between the mountains and the canyons, a beautiful base from which to enjoy the impressive landscapes.

Day 14: Villa Unión

Today you can visit the Talampaya Natural Park. This region is known for the Talampaya park and Valle de la Luna. The Talampaya National Park is a beautiful canyon mountain range, red colored. In addition, you can also visit the Valle de la Luna, the Valley of the Moon, a 60.3 hectare natural park that is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area owes its name to the desert landscape that resembles the lunar surface.

Day 15: Villa Unión – San Juan

(approx. 305 km | 4 hour drive)
At the village of Villa Unión you can choose to follow the route through the national parks Talampaya and Ischigualasto. If you choose for this, keep in mind that this is a route of 425 kilometers and about a 5.5 hour drive. This area is known for its Grand Canyon-like landscapes with bizarre rock formations. San Juan is an attractive city with a lovely climate surrounded by green hills. The city is predominantly modern and has wide boulevards and squares.

Day 16: San Juan – Mendoza

(approx. 195 km | 3 hour drive)
You will continue today to Mendoza. Mendoza is located at the foot of the Andes, a pleasant city with many beautiful old buildings and famous for its wine cultivation. It is the center of the Argentine wine industry, about 80% of Argentine wines are produced here.

Day 17 and 18: Mendoza

These days are planned off and give you the opportunity to get to know Mendoza and its fascinating surroundings. Around Mendoza you will find several beautiful wine bodegas, which are well worth a visit. The wineries offer free guided tours and you can taste some of the wines, after which there is of course the possibility to buy the wine. Mendoza is located close to the Andes, like the Aconcagua, with 6959 meters, the highest mountain in South America, is located in this region. Mendoza itself is a beautiful city with lots of greenery, wide avenues, beautiful parks and squares. It is wonderful to visit the squares and parks, to watch people, to cycle, to walk or to enjoy a terrace. Mendoza has numerous restaurants with cosy terraces where you can enjoy the excellent wines.

Day 19: Mendoza – Buenos Aires

Today you drive to Mendoza airport where you can return your rental car (approx. 35 km | 1 hour drive). You will then board your domestic flight to Buenos Aires. Once here you will be brought to your hotel. You have the rest of the afternoon at your leisure to enjoy Buenos Aires.

Day 20: Buenos Aires – Amsterdam 

Unfortunately, your unique journey through Argentina comes to an end. You will be picked up at your hotel and brought to the airport of Buenos Aires. Here you will board your intercontinental night flight to Amsterdam. You will arrive in Amsterdam the next day.

You will arrive in Amsterdam today.
